Bruce Power increases output through innovation and efficiency

Bruce Power will realize an additional 22 megawatts (MW) of clean, reliable and low-cost energy following innovative technology investment projects in its recently completed Unit 3 planned outage. This raises Bruce Power’s overall peak site output to 6,430 MW.

Bruce Power’s innovations have generated an extra 22 megawatts, which provides enough clean, reliable, low-cost electricity to power approximately 22,000 homes – equivalent to powering all the homes in Ontario cities the size of North Bay and Belleville. The additional output was achieved through technology advancements on the non-nuclear side, including a generator-stator improvement project that was integral to the uprate.

The higher output will continue to help Ontario through periods of high demand, which are ramping up with warmer summer temperatures. Bruce Power units also provide needed flexibility to the system through dynamic response capability, which is initiated when demand changes throughout the day or seasonally. This ensures that Ontarians have the electricity they need to power their lives and businesses.

“By safely and reliably producing more than 30 per cent of the province’s power with zero carbon emissions, Ontario has become the example other jurisdictions in North America look to for guidance and Bruce Power is proud of the role it plays in keeping Ontario’s air clean,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power President and Chief Executive Officer. “We thank our engineers, technicians and operators for their creativity, attention to detail and innovation in achieving this advancement and powering Ontario’s future.”

Increasing our output and operating the Bruce Power site to 2064 by innovating and extending the life of the units, Bruce Power will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually while injecting $4 billion into Ontario’s economy each year for decades. Over the course of the multi-year Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project, an additional 5,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created and sustained annually while another $1 billion will be invested in Ontario’s economy each year.
