Celebrate Earth Day today with a clean-up

Residents of the Town of Saugeen Shores are gathering this weekend to honour the spirit of Earth Day 2022 by pitching in to clean up their community.  The effort comes after a resolution from council last month acknowledging a climate change emergency.

The Town is asking residents to gather at 2 pm today for a 20-minute community-wide clean-up.  Citizens can clean-up the area directly around their home, business, or neighbourhood.  They are then encouraged to post online and share their photos with @SaugeenShoresON on Facebook or Instagram.   More than 35 families and groups have gathered at designated areas the entire week to do the same.

“Every little bit helps,” says Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “We have a responsibility to care for and protect the natural assets and resources we’ve been blessed with here in Saugeen Shores.  That’s why we have recommended a comprehensive plan to take bold steps in our fight against the effects of climate change.”

In March, Council approved nine recommendations from the Environmental Sustainability Ad Hoc Committee report on how to help the municipality, including:

  • Developing a plan to finance a Climate Protection Program,
  • Working with the County to implement waste reduction strategies,
  • Investigating an Urban Tree Canopy Plan
  • Recognizing community members who serve as exceptional environmental stewards.
