The new year on January 1, 2024, will mark the 25th anniversary of the amalgamation of Southampton, Port Elgin, and Saugeen Township to form the Town of Saugeen Shores.
In a recent report presented by Jill Roote, Manager, Strategic Initiatives to Council, she said that planning committee has been formed to act as the coordinating body to lead messaging, support grass roots recognition activities and plan Town-hosted celebratory events. Committee members include the Mayor, two (2) members of Council, community members, Town staff, Rotary clubs, Southampton and Port Elgin BIAs, Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce, Summer Music, and the Marine Heritage Association. The group began meeting earlier this year to map out recognition events for 2024.
Beginning on January 5th, the municipality will host an inaugural Council meeting recognition. Invited dignitaries will include previous Mayors and members of Council, the local Member of Parliament, Members of Provincial Parliament, the Saugeen First Nation Chief, and the Bruce County Warden. A reception open to the public will follow the ceremonial Council meeting.
In addition, the Committee has marked August 10th and 11th (2024) as the celebratory weekend and is working on the organization of events. The weekend kicks off Friday with the Port Elgin and Southampton BIAs coordinating fun evening events in both downtowns. Port Elgin will feature a teen dance while Southampton is planning an outdoor High Street dinner and dance. Saturday starts with a mayor’s pancake breakfast and opening ceremony with dignitaries followed by an afternoon filled with fun activities for all ages. These include relay races, balloons, road hockey, ball games, kites and so much more. There will be food throughout the day and into the evening. The day ends with a signature act – to be announced soon! Other items also in the works are a community time capsule, scavenger hunt, and fireworks.
The Committee also encourages other groups, organizations and businesses to create their own commemorative activities.
Although many of the costs for the schedule of events are being donated by various groups and organizations, some of the events, such as the concert, will include a modest ticket price. The Committee hopes to offset some of the initial costs with the raising of funds through donations and/or entrance fees. Estimated up-front costs associated with the event are $25,000 and will be included in the 2024 Business Plan for Council consideration.
