Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau recently corrected the information received from Bruce County that County Council, in fact, unanimously supported Saugeen Shores sending a letter to the Ministry of Transportation requesting a round-about at the intersection of County road 25 and Hwy. 21 (Goderich Street) at the south end of Port Elgin.
The section of highway is a connecting link, which refers to a section of a provincial highway that is under the jurisdiction of the province (Ministry of Transportation) while connecting through a municipality.
The intersection will eventually become a major route with the development of the Lamont Sports Complex immediately to the east of the intersection, in addition to the expansion of a major housing development that will open on to Bruce Road 25 through the expanded Bruce Street. Hwy. 21 at the intersection is also a major route for the Bruce Nuclear Power employees during two daily shift changes. In addition, during peak summer tourist traffic times, Bruce Road 25 is a primary route to one of the municipality’s major beaches, Gobles Grove, in addition to the UNIFOR Family Education Centre and Conference Centre.
The County Committee has directed the Transportation and Environmental Services staff to research the proposal further and return to the Committee at a later date with recommendations.
