Hamilton Police Service has determined a fire at 8 Greening Court in Dundas that killed two individuals was a homicide.
On July 9, 2018, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Hamilton Fire and Hamilton Police Service were dispatched to a house fire at 8 Greening Court in Dundas.
The victims, Carla and Alan Rutherford, both in their 60’s, were in the residence at the time. Alan Rutherford was ultimately able to escape the home and knock on a neighbour’s door for help but Carla was unable to escape. She was rescued from the home by Hamilton Fire and pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. Alan was transported to hospital in critical condition but died as a result of his injuries later in the afternoon.
Carla, an avid rug hooker, often attended Chantry Centre’s fall rug-hooking program with her sister, Vicky Pick-up (Cooper) of Southampton.
The Ontario Fire Marshal office responded to investigate the scene in cooperation with the Hamilton Police Service Forensic Services Branch and Major Crime Unit. The fire was deemed “Suspicious” and, after four days of investigation at the fire scene, the Ontario Fire Marshal and Hamilton Police Service Major Crime Unit have determined the fire was deliberately set and that Carla and Alan Rutherford were victims of homicide.
