Harbourlite Restaurant enters lease renewal agreement

Tourists and local residents will be happy to learn that the popular Harbourlite Restaurant overlooking Port Elgin Harbour will continue to provide the restaurant’s famous burgers, fries and ice-cream.

Joan Johnston, who has owned and operated the Harbourlite since 1999, has entered into a five-year sub-lease with the Town of Saugeen Shores and Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for the site.

DFO has the head lease and any sub-lease must follow its timeframe.  The Harbourlite will pay $5,330 plus applicable taxes this year in addition to $400 for Town garbage service from May to October. The agreement also includes an annual economic adjustment increase set by council.

Among the details of the lease are continued permitted usage of Town washroom facilities adjacent to the Harbour Office for restaurant patrons.

The restaurant has been a main-stop for tourists and residents alike for many years and has also been a major employer for summer students.  The Harbourlite is meant to be a family-friendly stop for a hotdog or burger and fries or a hand-scooped ice-cream cone.
