Hockey Hub Mass Immunization clinics making a return

Under the leadership of the Grey Bruce Health Unit, Bruce Power is again supporting the establishment of vaccination sites within the region. This will enable a large volume of booster shots to be administered in the coming weeks in the fight against rising COVID-19 cases and the Omicron variant.

In addition, and again in partnership health unit, the company will hold the province’s first corporate-led vaccine clinic for employees’ third doses, which will begin the week of December 20th.

“Earlier this year, Bruce Power collaborated with the Grey Bruce Health Unit and public health units across the province to support the establishment of a number of mass vaccination sites,” said James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Chief Development Officer and Executive Vice President Operational Services. “At Bruce Power, we know big projects, and by offering our logistical expertise and support, we can help alleviate some of the burden on public health to keep our communities safe and healthy.”

This support builds off experience from the mass vaccination efforts with Hockey Hubs earlier this year. The company will also be assisting with personal protective equipment and helping access the extensive nuclear supply chain in the region.

“Throughout the province’s historic vaccination effort, Bruce Power has played a leadership role in collaborating with public health, private organizations and the Ontario government to expand vaccination capacity across the province,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. “As we respond to the Omicron variant, Bruce Power has stepped forward quickly to establish vaccine clinics.”

Dr. Ian Arra, Medical Officer of Health at the Grey Bruce Health Unit, who developed the Hockey Hub vaccination clinic model, thanked the company for its ongoing support.

“In collaboration with Bruce Power, local partners and volunteers, under the leadership and direction of the Grey Bruce Health Unit, a new strategy to respond to this increased eligibility and demand is being implemented,” added Dr. Arra.  “This partnership will enable a large volume of COVID-19 vaccines to be administered in the coming weeks and help defend against the Omicron variant.”

Bruce Power is offering three central locations as mass vaccination clinics and Public Health is evaluating the fit of these locations for clinic functions. The clinics will utilize the Hockey Hub model used in the spring and summer in Grey Bruce.

“This model of vaccine delivery has been used throughout Canada and internationally to significantly increase the capacity to vaccinate a large number of people in a short amount of time, saving lives,” says Dr. Arra. “Public health has been a leader in managing the pandemic, and by partnering with companies like Bruce Power, we are able to focus on administering doses safely and efficiently.”

Founded by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Scongack also co-chairs the Ontario Vaccination Support Council (OVSC), which brings together private-sector support for Ontario’s vaccination efforts, and will help in the vaccination efforts to tackle omicron in Ontario.

“Bruce Power has always led by example from the very beginning and throughout the pandemic and is stepping up once again,” said Rocco Rossi, Ontario Chamber President. “The acceleration of capacity to roll out the booster shots is a call to arms to all Ontarians and the business community stands ready to do our part with leaders like Bruce Power.”
