Local author and teacher, Jackie Ewing of Port Elgin, has created witty, and often times touching, vignettes in her first book ‘Vignettes of a Small-town Girl – Life Lessons from a Late Bloomer’.
From pants folder to rock picking to strawberry planting, haying to scooping ice cream, house cleaning to being a nanny, hotel receptionist to waitress and as an international teacher that took her to several countries, Ewing has experienced life that, in her own words she “… would not change”.
When COVID struck however and home isolation took hold, Ewing decided to turn her hand to writing about her life experiences and the result is a funny, charming book filled with ‘Life Lessons’ that she has learned along the way – described in vignettes that many can relate to.
Among the ‘Life Lessons’ are … there is power in not caring in what other people think. The minute you start caring about what other people think, is the minute you stop being yourself and … figure out what brings you joy and find a way to get paid doing it.
These gems are told with often laugh-out-loud humour as seen through the lens of the “… bookworm, tea granny, lover of kittens and puppies and a wryly self-professed fashionista … ”
From her early childhood remembrances to the angst of teenage-hood and life as a university student, through her travels and experiences throughout the world as an international teacher riding a camel or an elephant, Ewing vividly depicts the many scenes of life that have resulted in she views as ‘Life Lessons’.
With an Honours of Bachelor of Arts degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, Ewing has always been a voracious reader who comes from a long family line of teachers. Today, she lives with her husband, four children, a cat and dog in Saugeen Shores and has followed her passion for teaching at a local elementary school.
Ewing’s book is available at www.amazon.com and www.amazon.ca
The book will also soon be available locally and a book-signing launch is being planned.
