When Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau was asked about the recent Letter to the Editor submitted to Saugeen Times on the possible demise of the ward system, he was unequivocal in his answer.
In a written statement, he said that, “The assertions in Mr. Boyd’s letter are completely baseless. There are absolutely no plans to change the ward system. The matter has not been discussed at all at Council and I have absolutely no plan to introduce such a discussion myself. I have found that our present system works quite well; I have always been clear that I do not support changing or eliminating the wards.”
At Monday night’s Council meeting, the Mayor was again pointedly asked for his views regarding the Ward system.
In this term of Council, Mayor Charbonneau was acclaimed. However, when he sat as a Councilor in his previous two terms, the subject of ward versus the ‘at-large’ system did come up. At that time, Councilor Charbonneau took a firm stance and also spoke out against considering making any proposed change to the system.
