Mayor’s statement on the passing of former Port Elgin Mayor Brian Cleaver

It is with great regret that the Town acknowledges the loss of former Mayor Brian Cleaver.

A proud Welshman by birth, Brian eagerly embraced this community as his own.  For decades, he was active in community social clubs, and ultimately sought public service by becoming Mayor of Port Elgin in 1991.

His work for his community continued after he set aside the Mayor’s chain. In 2008, Brian won the Town’s Heritage Conservation Award for his work with the Southampton Art School Restoration Committee.

I had the pleasure of knowing Brian for many years and always admired him for his charming, optimistic disposition and for his dedication to serving our community.

To mark his passing – and to honour his service – I am ordering all municipal flags to half-mast until Wednesday, December 27th.

On behalf of all our residents, Saugeen Shores Town Council extends its deepest sympathies to Brian’s family and friends.

Luke Charbonneau,
Mayor, Town of Saugeen Shores
