Minor Hockey lends a helping hand to Jumpstart

Saugeen Shores Minor Hockey Association (SSMHA) made a donation to Mowbray’s Canadian Tire Jumpstart children’s charity on Saturday, December 15th.

(L-R) Austin Dunlop, Mike Mowbray, Gwen Doherty, Allison Charbonneau, Malachi                                                     McKinnon and Eleanor Mowbray

Allison Charbonneau presented $950 that was raised through the Chris Knott Memorial Hockey Tournament held in November.  “There were 18 rep teams from as far away as Parry Sound, Mt. Forest, Collingwood and Wasaga competing in Atom, Novice and PeeWee divisions.  The funds were raised through Registrations and raffles and, after  after all expenses were paid we had money left over,” said Charbonneau. “We know how Jumpstart helps kids get into extra curricular activities and sports, so we wanted to be able to give back to the program.”

JUMPSTART is all about kids and the importance that ‘play’ means in their lives. For some families, it can be difficult financially to have their children involved in extra-curricular activities and that’s where the community comes in.

“JUMPSTART is our way of helping those who are having a difficult time for whatever reason,” says Eleanor Mowbray.  “This is all about the kids and we are continually amazed at the generosity of our community.  Each year, the amount donated continues to grow but so does the need.  It helps children not only be able to take part in sports such as hockey, soccer, baseball and gymnastics but also in things like dance. We are also extremely concerned with preserving the  dignity of families so privacy is very protected.”

Jumpstart is completely confidential and can be accessed by calling Eleanor or Mike Mowbray at 519-389-6995 or by dropping in to Mowbray’s Canadian Tire in Port Elgin.
