Music is a vital part of education

On Friday, June 24th, Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) held its last concert of the year and the music was nothing short of ‘stupendous’!

What always amazes me at these school concerts and musicals of today, is the calibre of music.  The students played selections from the ‘Big Band’ era and they made it sound smooth and easy.  These were not simple little pieces, they were intricate with solos by students who played the music that one would think is beyond their years but they took it on like professionals.

Music teacher Kerri-Lynn Boys has brought out the best in her students by leading them through a wide variety of genres of music and it’s the reason she is one of the most popular teachers in the school.

Not playing an instrument, I can only admire the dedication and commitment that these students have had to become as accomplished as they are.

They say that music has a definite correlation with mathematics and life skills and to listen and watch these young people is to understand that concept.  They have to concentrate on timing (which is mathematically based), teamwork as they work with those around them, motor skills to play the instruments, listening skills and so much more.

If anyone, including governments, do not appreciate the value of music and the impact it has on the future generations and the value it adds to the citizens of the country, they should take the time out to experience a school concert.
