Official list of Saugeen Shores Council candidates announced

It’s official.  The list of Saugeen Shores candidates for Council has been announced and some of the names are those who are previous Councilors with experience while others, for the most part, are new to the political game.

Luke Charbonneau, previous Deputy Mayor, has been acclaimed as Mayor with no other opponents having stepped forward to run for the position.  Charbonneau comes with a wealth of experience in municipal politics.  He has sat for three terms on Council, the last two as Deputy Mayor, in addition to sitting as Chairs of the Police Services Board and the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority(SVCA).

According to Charbonneau, he is looking forward to leading a Council that is strategic and active in its efforts to leverage local benefit from the regionally significant investments being made by Bruce Power.  Charbonneau has always been outspoken on his stance in the belief that municipalities should have more control over local decision making and that there should be less regulation when it comes to small business.

  • I will support efforts to enhance economic development as a primary function of the municipal government
  • I will continue the municipality’s support for Bruce Power and for its Major Component Replacement project
  • I will ensure that Saugeen Shores continues to be a welcoming community for new residents and businesses including Bruce Power suppliers and their employees.
A Council that ensures that our neighbourhoods develop in a way that reflects the wishes of the people who actually live in them.
  • I will propose that the power to approve severances and plans of subdivision be relocated from Walkerton to our, local Council.
  • I will propose that we use a ‘Saugeen Shores neighbourhood lens’ when creating new Official Plans and Zoning By-Laws so that these important documents actually reflect our vision for our neighbourhoods.
  • I will support continuing to seek public input during the design stage of major public works capital projects.

While Charbonneau is now Mayor-elect, others are in a race for positions on Council.
