Operation beach patrol solves a crisis

Being a police officer is not all about big crime, capturing a criminal or stopping an impaired driver.  Sometimes, it’s something as simple as helping a little boy in pain.

On Friday, July 1st, Saugeen Shores Police Constable Ian Clark and Auxiliary Officer Paul Vargas were ‘walking the beat’ on Port Elgin Main Beach when a father and his little eight-year-old boy approached asking for a bandaid.  The officers said that they had a first-aid kit in the police vehicle and lead the father and son over to it.  When they asked what happened it was a little more serious than thought.  The little boy had a rock land on his finger and it had entirely removed a fingernail with much evidence of blood.

A bandaged finger and an officer glad to help

The officers set about compressing the finger and then wrapping it in sterilized gauze bandages.  The amazing thing?  Not a tear from this little guy (name withheld on request).

Sometimes being a police officer means something as small as being there when needed in time of a crisis … and every crisis is different in size depending on who and what is involved.

For this father and son, their crisis meant immediately going to those who could help …
the police.

Who knows what impact this small gesture will have on the future of an eight-year-old?
