February 8th was #SaferInternetDay and, today, as frightening as it may seem, more than 77% of children ages 9-17 have a smart phone, giving predators direct access to kids.
Saugeen Shores Police are urging parents to regularly “check in” with their children and teens about what they are doing, seeing, and experiencing online.
Everyone has a role to play in keeping kids safe online.
There are of course, several other apps and web based sites that could be used for inappropriate and concerning reasons.
One such app is ‘Discord’ and parents should be aware of the risks. There have been cases of predators targeting children on Discord. NBC News found 35 cases over the past six years in which adults were prosecuted on charges of kidnapping, grooming, or sexual assault that allegedly involved communications on Discord.
