The Saugeen Shores Fire Department, Saugeen Shores Police Service and Bruce County EMS responded to a fire at 9am on February 4 in a residential unit of Skyline Apartments, 764 Waterloo Street, Port Elgin.
Emergency services responded quickly after reports of alarms and heavy smoke from a third floor window of the unit. The structural fire was quickly extinguished and damage was contained to the single unit.
Two beloved pets were lost despite resuscitation efforts by Saugeen Shores Fire and Bruce County EMS. The tenants of the apartment were not home at the time of the fire.
“Because of working smoke alarms, the other residents of the building were alerted to the danger quickly,” said Rob Atkinson, Fire Prevention Officer. “This led to a safe and timely evacuation of the building.”
All other residents have been able to return to their units at this time. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but the fire is not considered suspicious in nature. Damage to the unit is estimated at $100,000.
