Recycling Program update – returning to normal

We are pleased to announce that Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling’s (BASWR) recycling pickup in Saugeen Shores will return to normal operations next week, beginning Wednesday, April 8. BASWR’s partnership with another provider will mean that blue box material will be processed instead of going to our landfill.

This Friday, April 3, there is a scheduled pick-up for the Saugeen Ward (visit for info) and we are asking that people on that route hold on to your blue box material for one cycle, if possible, and it will be sent for recycling on April 17.

Thank you for your patience during this time and a big thank you to BASWR for their quick response!

March 27, 2020 update: The Town is asking residents to hold on to their blue box materials for the next week or two, as Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling is very close to having a solution in place to get those materials to another facility.
Please do not put recycling out with your regular garbage in the meantime, as it would need to have a bag tag to be picked up. If you can’t store recyclables, you can put them out on your normal recycling day for disposal in the landfill.
And a reminder to please think of the people collecting your garbage: keep garbage in tied bags (even if in a pail) so there is no loose material; do your best to ensure garbage doesn’t blow around your neighbourhood; and keep sharp objects separate.

To protect its employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling (BASWR) has made the difficult decision to stop sorting recyclables by hand, both at their facility and curbside. In Saugeen Shores, materials will still be picked up on their normal recycling day, but will be sent to the landfill temporarily.

BASWR is working on a longer-term solution to find a place that can accept the unsorted material. If possible, please consider holding on to recyclable materials in the meantime.

As well, the Southampton Landfill is closed to the public. Account holders will be allowed access on March 27 and April 3 from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm only. Help us flatten the curve and keep our employees safe by using curbside garbage collection on your regular day.

When the COVID-19 situation improves, BASWR and the Southampton Landfill will return to normal operations. Stay updated with the latest changes on our COVID-19 updates page:

We appreciate your understanding. We are in this together.
