Remembering an old friend – Peter Haskey

To the Editor:
Peter Haskey was a great friend.  I worked with him many times over long periods.  He was a fun to be with person.  There was no nonsense with Peter.  On a tool maker’s scorecard he was A+.
I was working one day on the Stokes Bay Lighthouse, which is behind the Bruce County Museum in Southampton, and  I saw Peter every day exercising by walking around Fairy Lake.  He would wave and smile.
The Stokes Bay Restoration was for me the most difficult  because I was alone day after day.
One day, Peter stopped and asked me if he could help?  “Of course,” I said.  I had worked with him before and knew his standards.  He jumped in and we were off on an adventure.
Much later, I asked him about joining me. Why did he stop that day?  He said that he watched me working alone and knew that I was interested in doing the job right. Coming from Peter, that was a real compliment.
My regular work mates were no longer available.  My dear friend Bob Trelford was terminally ill and I missed him terribly.  After Peter, came a 16-year-old boy from France who helped us, as did the father of Barb Ribey (former Museum Executive Director).
The complete story can be found on pages 126, 127 and 128 of the book ‘We Were Here’  available at the Tour Base in Southampton.
Peter, I know you will have the most beautiful garden in Paradise by now.
Your FriendMike Sterling.
