On Wednesday, Jan. 26th, at 2:30 p.m., Saugeen Shores firefighters responded to a report of smoke at The Queens on Goderich Street in Port Elgin. The building includes upper-level apartments.
Firefighters from Units 61, 66 and 62 from the Port Elgin and Southampton Stations responded on scene. On arrival, smoke was visible on the main floor.
Fire crews initiated a thorough investigation to determine the source of the smoke, which was discovered in a roof cavity between two buildings. Crews quickly put out the fire and removed all burned materials to ensure no risk of further fire.
No one was injured. One tenant has been displaced and is staying with family.
Saugeen Shores Fire Prevention is investigating the cause of the fire, along with an estimate of damage.
Due to the quick actions of the building manager notifying the fire department and the efforts of the firefighters, a historic part of the downtown core received only minor damage.
