On Wednesday, April 26th, the Saugeen Shores Hall of Fame Selection Committee met to consider 21 nominees eligible for the 2023 edition of the Saugeen Shores Hall of Fame. Upon review of the candidates eligibility and criteria, voting commenced. Each member of the Selection Committee was allowed to vote for up to 10 nominees. To be selected for induction, a nominee must receive votes from 75% of the Selection Committee on any round of voting. Nominees who receive votes from 50% of the Selection Committee will stand for selection on subsequent voting rounds.
Prior to voting, it was determined that Aynsley Kemila is an automatic selection to the Hall, in the Athlete category, for her accomplishments and medal results during her Special Olympics athletic career.
During 1st round voting, Ray Fenton was selected in the Builder category, notably for his career in education and championing the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre.
Jack Baker (deceased), a professional hockey player from the early 1900s was selected in the Athlete category.
In subsequent round voting, Jim McKinnon was selected in the Builder category for his years of coaching and in management of local hockey and baseball, minor and intermediate teams, of note the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks Intermediate hockey team and the Port Elgin Blue Devils Intermediate fastball team.
The nominees who were not selected this year will remain eligible for selection for a period of six years from their nomination year.
Saugeen Shores Hall of Fame inductions occur every odd year. The Hall of Fame display is located in the lobby at the Saugeen Shores Plex. In 2021, there was no induction ceremony due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
The Saugeen Shores Hall of Fame induction evening for 2023 will be on Wednesday, May 31st in the Rotary Hall at the Saugeen Shores Plex. Tickets are $35 per person. Cocktails are at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m.. There will also be a silent auction. Everyone is invited to attend.
