Saugeen Shores Mayor to stand for re-election

It’s official.  Incumbent Luke Charbonneau will stand for re-election in the municipal election to be held on October 24th 2022.

“It’s a privilege to be Mayor of the Town of Saugeen Shores.,” said Charbonneau. “We have done a lot over the last four years.”

Luke Charbonneau has served on Saugeen Shores Council since 2006 and has been Mayor since December 2018. During his term as Mayor, the Town of Saugeen Shores has had many significant achievements:

  • The community won Kraft Heinz Project Play and constructed the new Lamont Sports Park.
  • The land claim dispute between the Town and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation was settled, opening a new era of positive relations between the Town and the First Nation.
  • The Southampton Coliseum was revitalized.
  • The Port Elgin break wall was repaired and enhanced.
  • Multiple new doctors were recruited and an urgent care clinic was opened at the Southampton Medical Building;
  • The Nuclear Innovation Institute was opened in Port Elgin

“Most significantly of all, we stood together and remained strong through the pandemic emergency” said Charbonneau, reflecting on his term as Mayor.

Looking forward, Charbonneau has a plan for the next four years.

His priorities include a strong push to address the housing shortage in Saugeen Shores. “We will double the number of apartment units in our community, providing housing for folks at every income level,” said Charbonneau. His housing plan also includes an effort to enhance regional rent subsidies to those Bruce County residents who are most in need.

The Charbonneau plan also includes the construction and completion of a new recreation and aquatics center by the end of 2024, environmental measures to reduce waste going into landfill and enhance tree cover in the community and a renewed push to position Saugeen Shores and Bruce County at the innovative heart of clean energy production in Canada.

“I have the experience to unite the next Council and seize every opportunity we have to enhance the quality of life for everyone in Saugeen Shores”, stated Charbonneau. Voting in the 2022 municipal election will take place, via internet and telephone, between 10:00am on October 14th and 8:00pm on October 24th .
