Saugeen Shores Special Olympic athletes prove they are champions

Once again, a team from Saugeen Shores took to the podium and brought home medals.

The Special Olympic athletes returned home on Sunday night (Mar. 3), tired but happy with their achievements, from the National Winter Games in Calgary, the precursor to the Worlds.

Team Ontario was the most decorated team from across Canada and, among the medalists, Saugeen Shores athletes proved their winning skills bringing home several medals.

He was not alone however, as Nordic Ski champion, Mike Bailey won Gold in the 2.5km and Bronze in the 500metre.

“We had five members on the 5-pin bowling team,” said coach Cheryl Smethurst, “and everyone of them won a medal.”

The Saugeen Shores athletes travelled with two coaches, Cheryl Smethurst of Saugeen Shores and Norma Breadner of Owen Sound.

“It was an absolutely amazing experience,” said Smethurst. “It was so special and, when we returned home to London on Sunday and saw the waiting crowd to welcome us, it was very emotional.”

“We couldn’t have done this without the help of the community and fundraising efforts by the athletes and their families and friends,” said Smethurst.

Now, moving forward, Smethurst says their next goal will be to attend the Special Olympic World Games in Italy in 2025.  “Our athletes are absolutely up to competing against any others in the World event.  They are dedicated, committed and talented.”
