Saugeen Shores U10 Girls Softball: An exciting week leading up to the semi-finals

It’s been another exciting week of baseball for our U10 Girls Underwood Financial Saugeen Shores Sting team. The week started on Tuesday, August with an action packed game versus the Oakville Angels in Clifford for the girls’ third Provincial Bracket game.

The game started off typically enough with Brooke Lamont pitching and Janey Harris catching and Lamont striking out three, but Oakville still managing to score two runs.

Then it became a game of “firsts” for these young girls as Peyton Myatt took to the mound and struck out three batters for a three up, three down inning, Brooke Lamont caught her first pop fly, Olivia Clark executed a perfect sacrifice squeeze bunt to take the lead in the fourth inning.

                                               Peyton Myatt pitching

Then Keagan Kruse slugged herself onto the bases, Lane Topham hit a double and Janey Harris garnered her first triple to great cheering from the bench.

It was a great game to watch and our Sting team hung in there, never giving and deserving that final score of 8-4 to claim the win.

Fresh from their great win against Oakville, the girls arrived in Kitchener on Saturday, August 7th, for their first round robin tournament of the season. Despite the extreme heat, our young athletes gave it their all as they played against LaSalle Sr. for their first game of the day. It was a very close game with many exciting plays like Elliana Cameron catching her first line drive, 2nd baseman Brynlie Wilcox throwing to 1st baseman Peyton Myatt for an out, then third baseman Maelle Wiles with a fantastic throw to 1st baseman Lane Topham who had a great reach to catch the ball for another out and Olivia Clark with another perfectly executed sacrifice squeeze bunt. Unfortunately, despite all of the Sting players’ efforts, LaSalle Sr. managed to score five runs at the bottom of the last inning for a final score of 8-6 to take the win.

For their second game of the day, the girls faced off against Kitchener. As the game started, it quickly became evident that winning against this Kitchener team would be a huge challenge. Our young Sting team tried their best, but they were clearly playing a much more experienced team and unfortunately, lost the game with a final score of 15-0.

Although disappointed by their loss to Kitchener, the girls rallied for their third game versus Aurora. It was wonderful to see the girls come back to the field and making great plays, finding patience at the plate and encouraged by some great pitching from Peyton Myatt and Brooke Lamont who garnered three strike outs each to snag the win with a final score of 13-9 to end the day.

The action continues this Saturday, August 14th with another round robin tournament in Barrie where the girls will get to play Stratford again for their quarter final Provincial Bracket game.

Stay tuned to see if our Saugeen Shores U10 team gets to move on to the semi-finals!
