Around the world, a wave of blue and yellow is signalling heartfelt support for the Ukrainian people. Last week, born of conversations about the gross injustices taking place, the Saugeen District Senior School community came together to see what we could do to help. After briefly contemplating a toonie drive, we decided to aim higher… much higher. A seemingly impossible goal of $10,000 was set and we had just three short days before March Break to get it done.
As donations began to arrive, many staff donated, and some even encouraged their students to contribute with offers to match donations. Family, friends, neighbours… all began to add to the drive and on Friday we were just shy of our $10,000 goal. A final Friday afternoon push resulted in an incredible $11,600 final tally. With many helping hands, the donations were collected, counted, banked and donated to the Red Cross Ukraine relief fund by the end of the day.
It really is remarkable that our school raised $11,600 to assist refugees who have fled Ukraine. With the Federal matching program in place, the SDSS Royals community will help to make a huge difference in the lives of many.
