The Power Workers Union (PWU) donated $5,000 to Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) greenhouse program.
The funds will be used to upgrade the hoop-house with needed irrigation lines, ventilation and plant tables.
The Greenhouse program is self-sustaining and all funds raised through plant sales goes right back into its support.
There are 22 students at a time in the program and every student has a specific job and responsibility, in addition to a network of three adult volunteers who donate time on a regular basis checking and monitoring plants and watering.
“The students spend almost all their time in the greenhouse with hands-on experience,” says teacher Keith Day. “We have completed planters/hanging baskets for the downtown cores of Southampton and Port Elgin, as well as Bruce Power, and it gives the students so much in the way of experience.”
As a result of the program, many students have gone on to post-secondary education in areas such as environmental sciences studies and horticulture.
