September is the time to Walk for Parkinson’s

Heading into September, participants all over Southwestern Ontario will Walk for Parkinson’s on September 9th and 10th. Participants have been fundraising over the summer and plan to walk to not only raise funds but also awareness for Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease is a slow, progressive neurodegenerative disorder, making activities of daily living difficult for those with the disease. Primary symptoms include tremors, rigidity, slow movement, postural instability, and sleep disturbance. Over 50% of people diagnosed also report experiencing depression, anxiety, dementia, memory problems, and difficulty communicating.

Young-onset Parkinson’s disease is on the rise with an estimated 5-10% of people diagnosed being under the age of 40. By 2030, the number of people with Parkinson’s disease is expected to double.

Locally, participants will walk through some of the region’s most beautiful parks and recreation areas and, then, during and after the walk participants will enjoy fun activities, entertainment, and refreshments.

The Saugeen Shores – Kincardine walk begins at North Shore Park in Port Elgin on September 10th.  Registration takes place at 1:00 p.m. with the Walk beginning at 2:00 p.m.  To support a participant or to donate, CLICK HERE.  For those wanting to participate, you can either take part as an individual or as a team and collect cash, cheques or on-line donations. For those unable to take part in the walk, there is still the opportunity to donate.

All funds raised stay local to provide vital services and programs, in addition to funding for research, education, and advocacy initiatives that impact the 10,000+ people living with Parkinson’s in Southwestern Ontario.
