The Rotary Club of Southampton’s International Service Committee at its meeting on March 9th, has agreed a series of measures to immediately release $1,000 dollars of funding to support urgent humanitarian efforts in the Ukraine.
The club is donating $500 dollars to the Canadian Red Cross Ukrainian Relief Fund. (Individual donations to this fund are matched dollar for dollar by the Canadian Government up to $30m)
The club is also donating $500 dollars to the Rotary Foundation Fund for Disaster Relief Grants for use by predominantly European Rotary Clubs in their Ukrainian humanitarian efforts.
The Committee has taken an action to monitor and evaluate other avenues of aid over the coming months and perhaps years to determine how best to provide further help and assistance as the full consequences of this humanitarian crisis unfolds.
Southampton Rotary is also an annual supporter of Shelter Box, a Rotary International Disaster Relief partner which is currently deployed on the ground in the Ukraine and Poland offering expertise and assistance in providing basic shelter.
The Club’s International Service Chair said, “As we all struggle to come to terms with the war in Ukraine, it is difficult to imagine being an ocean away that we are experiencing the worst refugee crisis since World War II. Through these donations and our commitment to look at other avenues of aid, while not taking our eyes off other natural disasters, we are offering a helping hand to alleviate humanitarian suffering.”
