Special Olympian floor hockey players try their hand on ice

They normally play floor hockey but, at the Friday night, January 4th, WOAA Winterhawks Sr. Men’s hockey game, local Special Olympians strapped on their skates to try their hand on ice and take shots on the Hawks’ goalie, Jeff Flagler.

The Olympians are part of the Central Bruce floor hockey team, known as the Saugeen Shores Shrikes, coached by Dennis Virtue.

The members, Jeremy Kranenburg, Carly Underwood, April Virtue and Mylee Jelly, also began the Winterhawks vs Shallow Lake Crushers by being the flag bearers, a job normally carried out by local minor hockey players.

Jeremy Kranenburge proved himself a force to be reckoned with as he scored four goals against Flagler.

When it comes to giving minor hockey players and Special Olympians a chance to step on the ice in a competitive spirit, the Winterhawks are a team that gives back to the community with their time and talents.
