Each month, G. C. Huston Public School in Southampton holds a ‘Spirit Assembly’ and, this year’s last Assembly for 2014 honoured a special friend of the school.
In Southampton, he’s known as ‘The Sign Guy’, who sits on his bench at the bridge that crosses the Saugeen River. There, he creates and holds signs bearing various slogans that he shows to motorists and passersby … some are prophetic, some are political but all have an underlying sense of dry wit.
What many people don’t know is his committed support to the school. Not a wealthy man, he still donates to programs, such as the Student Council initiatives, with little to no fanfare.
“This is our way of saying thank you, Sign Guy,” says Principal Dan Russell. Every student, staff member and teacher made their own signs which they wore to the Spirit Assembly to honour the man who has financially helped the school many times.
