Survey – Bump-outs: Are they a good idea

Saugeen Times Survey

Below are some of the responses received:
Need more room for parking – – NOT LESS
_______________________________

Don’t understand the why?
_______________________________

Have made it harder for snow removal and the loss of parking spots. But what do you expect from the people who don’t care about the cost to the taxpayer
_______________________________

Ridiculous waste of money! Why? We don’t need fewer parking spots and narrow intersections in Southampton. Plowing must be a nightmare, and those ugly red curb markers all winter, spring and fall.
_______________________________

Why would you put them there? The ones on High Street (Grosvenor to Huron) are more than stupid and you want to waste yet more money on more of them?
_______________________________

They look terrible. The ones in now take away parking spots. The very people who complain that our town is changing are the ones changing it.
_______________________________

why???????less parking………
_______________________________

Absolutely not! A terrible idea.
_______________________________

Completely unnecessary and a nuisance.
_______________________________

I think they are an eyesore, not to mention dangerous. With trucks parking in the middle of the street, it’s tight enough to get around corners as it is, Summer will be a disaster with all the extra traffic.
_______________________________

what a waste of tax payers dollars. If you can’t cross the street in Southampton safely with out them, where in the hell can you!
_______________________________

Complete waste of taxpayer money.
_______________________________

They do make traffic slow down and look before entering the intersection. Now if they can only move the angle parking further from the corners so that you aren’t half way through the intersection to see if it’s clear to proceed. This occurs because of so many pick-ups on the roads nowadays.
_______________________________

Unsafe poorly thought out idea lost parking may never be used SNOW REMOVAL PROBLEM FROM HELL
_______________________________

Parking is sparse , so it doesn’t make sense ,, to any away. I also find the bump outs to be quite ugly and unattractive. Both bump outs on the corners of High and Huron and High and Grovenor make turning left or right on either street a traffic hazard and depending on the season , they make visibility hard to see oncoming traffic
_______________________________

Not the present design. If they had used the design similar to those in Teeswater they would have been better.
_______________________________

Although the bump outs look good and provide an area to have benches, bike racks etc. to rest, they do take away parking spaces for shoppers that are already at a premium, especially for shoppers with mobility problems that cannot walk longer distances to shop in the local stores
_______________________________

You would think there are many other pressing problems to solve.
_______________________________

People have to realize that snow removal costs will go up once these go in. Big city thoughts in a small town
_______________________________

there is no need for these bump outs on our beautiful Southampton main street, there has never been any vehical pedestrian accidents, drivers have always been very accomodating to pedestrians crossing High St.what will the extra cost of snow removal be to the tax payers,as well as extra time to clear the snow from High St.
_______________________________

Streets are congested enough now.
_______________________________

NO, NO,NO! They have ruined the beautiful wide unobstructed main street. If you are driving a small car or truck you can navigate them okay but if you are driving anything larger they are a proper nuisance. They are a definite step backwards.
_______________________________

There is no need to continue all the way to Victoria street. I have never felt that there was an issue trying to cross the street in between crosswalks. Has anyone questioned the snowplow operators as to how easy snow removal was around them? Let’s spend money on something really needed like a new pool !!!
_______________________________

Joke of a main street now. Another blatant waste of money. This council is very good at squandering our tax $.
_______________________________

They are death trap for anyone on mobility scooter or cannot walk very good
_______________________________

stupid waiste of taxpayers money
_______________________________

The only one that makes any sense is the one at Grosvenor st. Waste of money that could be spent on other road inprovements
_______________________________

They make crossing the street much safer for people walking. We have a protected space to walk out and see traffic now. Drivers need to be reminded to STOP at stop signs and roll forward slowly. Stop means stops right here. When will crosshatch markings and stop lines be painted? Drivers need reminders.
_______________________________

Not only do they look bad and create more work (island filled with grass)someone should have asked the snowplow drivers their thoughts. Surely they will stop this waste of money.
_______________________________

Absolutely not. It interferes with parking and snow removal. It does not have a pleasant appearance either Absolutely not. It interferes with availability of parking spaces and snow removal. It adds nothing to the appearance of our street.
_______________________________

Again wasting money
_______________________________

For Safety, yes. For looks, no. not really.
_______________________________
Waste of money and loss of parking spots
_______________________________

they should be taken out very stupid waste of money
_______________________________

Rrrrrr
_______________________________

Loss of parking and they’re ugly
_______________________________

We don’t have enough parking as it. Why would take more away. Leave High as it is.
_______________________________

NO. although they look very nice they take up valuable parking space, especially during the months of July and August when Saugeen Shores welcomes back summer tourists.
_______________________________

Reduces parking. Interferes With snow removal.
_______________________________

Our tax dollars can be spent in much better ways than with these awefull bump outs. They must be getting to much revenue from our property taxes.
_______________________________

Why not? It’s a safety issue.
_______________________________

No I am not in favour, the bump outs are annoying, take away parking, look like crap, terrible design, unnecessary, makes the town look bad, makes me not want to walk downtown out of embarrassment and shame.
_______________________________

They are not only ugly, but unnecessary and ridiculous!
_______________________________

Absolutely ridiculous, another waste of taxpayers money.
_______________________________

I hate the bump outs & feel they are totally unnecessary!
_______________________________

it will actually make it more difficult to see what is coming down the street forcing cars to creep out further onto the road.
_______________________________

The dumbest thing we have done
_______________________________

why do something stupid to something that is nice the way it is. what do they accomplish? all they do is make it more difficult for the town for snow removal and increase the cost of it. a
_______________________________

As High St becomes busier each summer with vehicle traffic of all sorts, creating something out of concrete that is intended to provide pedestrian safety should be embraced.
_______________________________

Not necessary, causes problems for snow removal and less parking spaces
_______________________________

What a waste of money.
_______________________________

Yes but must get rid of ridiculous angled (front bumper to curb) parking. You need to back out blind. Reverse (back bumper to curb) is much safer.
_______________________________

The concrete bumps would hopefully be a determent to those who have a tendency to speed on Victoria Street.
_______________________________

Does not suit a small town atmosphere in Bruce County. Maybe in Florida
_______________________________

Not needed. The ones there now are ridiculous. Barb & Lorne Currie
_______________________________

NO more bump outs!
_______________________________

The bump outs do not add anything to the “curb” appeal of the street and are more of an obstacle to traffic and i’m sure for works dept. in the winter in particular.
_______________________________

A proper crosswalk would be a much safer alternative for both drivers and pedestrians.
_______________________________

Who thought this is a good idea? Not really sure what problem they are trying to correct.
_______________________________

change for the sake of change
_______________________________

Unnecessary, aesthetically unpleasant , nuisance to cyclists
_______________________________

The beautiful wide Main Street of Southampton is being ruined by these totally unnecessary eyesores. They take up valuable parking and serve absolutely no purpose.
_______________________________

What a stupid idea. Every person I talk to has the same comment. Whoever made this decision should at least explain to the people of Southampton why? Less parking downtown hurts business as well.
_______________________________

We have a lovely main street or we did until some idiots thought the ones already installed were a good idea. The wide main street is part of the charm of Southampton. As someone born and raised here I do not want to see our town changed by companies from the city with their plans.Hire a firm that knows the town or similar towns.
_______________________________

Not in favour at all. They are horrid
_______________________________

A danger to snow removal. Danger to see around piles of snow to pull out on High St.Roadway now too narrow! Parking spots gone. Merchants suffer residents the same. If it’s not broke don’t fix it!!!!!!
_______________________________

why not just invite all american big buisnesses to take over small town southampton
_______________________________

Has anyone considered during the busy months when turning onto high street with a boat or large trailer/motor home? With these bump outs there will be more accidents or even worse someone getting seriously hurt. One more thing to add, they look horrible and have ruined the look of high street looking down to the flag.
_______________________________

A very stupid idea and a waste of inflated dollars. Turning left or right from Grosvenor Street onto High Street already presents visual difficulties. By adding more distractions at our corners will only worsen visibility.
_______________________________

Should be a traffic circle..island in the centre of the road.
_______________________________

What a absolute waste of mony
_______________________________

Should be a traffic circle..island in the centre of the road.
_______________________________

What a absolute waste of money I’m not sure what Tey hope to gain because no will not stop where they are spot to stop. They will stop at the outer edge of bump outs
_______________________________

Wasteful, not needed. Decorative rope and a couple of planters would have done the same in stead of removing parking and spending hundreds of thousands of Dollars for the ten weeks in the summer. Southampton has the only true High Street let’s celebrate it.
_______________________________

Parking is harder and snow removal was even worse maybe add a cross walk by the walker house for safety
_______________________________

Parking is harder and snow removal was even worse maybe add a cross walk by the walker house for safety
_______________________________

I voted “NO” because I am not sure what purpose they serve. Were they created to help beautify downtown Southampton? Can somebody give more information as to why they are there. Parking in the summer in Southampton is challenging and these Bump Outs don’t really help to solve that problem.
_______________________________

They are fantastic. They make the walking distance on the road less thus safe. They slow traffic down again making it safer. They take up almost no parking places. A wonderful addition to our main street
_______________________________

They may work in Southampton. they will be a b problem for snow clearing.
_______________________________

They are a better option than the removal of angle parking, adding parallel parking with a median down the middle which was tabled in the Nov 2014 Streetscape Plan
_______________________________

Taking away parking. Changing the character of the Main Street and the stated purpose is stupid. Usually people are encouraged to cross at intersections. This encourages people to walk across where ever.
_______________________________

It seems unnecessary, bad for business, and expensive!
_______________________________

That’s a terrible idea
_______________________________

Unnecessary
_______________________________

The bumpouts are a disaster! With people standing on them there is no way for a driver to see if traffic is coming. We lost parking spaces. Why didnt you just install a traffic light?!
_______________________________

Good luck plowing snow in the winter!
_______________________________

Already not enough parking in Sothampton’ll8Nos High 1st.
_______________________________

Think they will make unsafe for pedestrian traffic and take up too many parking spots for customers for merchants.
_______________________________

Makes street crossing much safer for pedestrians. In many European cities, cars are banned from the main downtown areas. Also favoured by the merchants. Allan Murray
_______________________________

I hate the ones we have from Grosvenor to Huron. What a waste of parking space!!!
_______________________________

It is an expensive undertaking that is dangerous to drivers, takes away needed parking spaces and supposedly provides added safety for pedestrians
_______________________________

They do not make sense already good visibility in that area with oncoming traffic
_______________________________

ridiculous waste
_______________________________

STUPID IDEA! Took away valuable parking spots, that are much needed I the summer months!
_______________________________

Traffic impairment and a road maintenace nightmare.
_______________________________

they are unsightly, will cost more to tend in summer/winter (grass! difficult for snowplows) make High St. narrower to drive on and unnecessary for safety. Never heard of anyone being hit by a vehicle on High St.
_______________________________

winter snow removal valuable parking space
_______________________________

Almost had someone run into the side of my vehicle turning onto High Street by the Cenotaph.
_______________________________

No way,dum idea!
_______________________________

Totally ridiculous- reduces available parking, increases difficulty of snow removal, negative impact on traffic flow & safety, unsightly
_______________________________

What a waste of taxpayers money
_______________________________

ridiculous idea
_______________________________

They make the road too narrow I can’t tell you how many times I have had to stop to let oncoming traffic through before I could proceed. They also take up much needed parking spaces.
_______________________________

Our founders would be very upset to see our lovely wide street is gone! Long time residents Don and Sybil Mercer
_______________________________

We need to plan for our busiest times when it can be difficult to cross High Street due to more traffic driving at higher than safe speeds on a street blocked by large parked vehicles.
_______________________________

Unnecessary expense, they are awkward looking. They are ridiculous and an example of going ahead with a project that nobody wanted.
_______________________________

It will ruin the look of our downtown. Plus more parking spaces will be gone!
_______________________________

Absolutely…add some planters or even better still some street sculptures to thus newly created space
_______________________________

These are not needed period. Have any pedestrians been run over they way it exists now…NO. . it’s also not aesthetically pleasing for a heritage area and ambience of this town. I am big time against this as a full time reside of 40 years plus.
_______________________________

There was no parking on High St. south of Albert when I was there last Friday. The bump outs will only make the problem worse. Please, no more bump outs.
_______________________________

I think the ones on High St near Huron take away from the beauty of our lovely town with the wide street ending at the beautiful lake. I feel they made driving very hard/dangerous this winter with all the snow we get in Southampton I can not see what good they do but rather that they are a nuisance for drivers walkers and the beauty of Southampton. I am very against these bump outs.
_______________________________

They are a disaster waiting to happen! We need to get rid of whoever dreamed up such a dumb idea.
_______________________________

Ridiculous waste of taxpayers’ money!!!!
_______________________________

Reduces premium summertime parking spaces.
_______________________________

Just make Southampton town center totally traffic free and change it into a pedestrian only zone. This encourages people to walk and it also creates an opportunity for a weekly open air market day during three seasons of the year.
_______________________________

The most asinine project that any municipality could start. For goodness sakes put a stop to it. An accident about to happen. Perhaps our council members and mayor could go shovel in the winter and save money and possibly accidents that could occur
_______________________________

waste of money , look hideous
_______________________________

loss of toooooo many valuable parking spots
_______________________________

Insanity exists.
_______________________________

They are more of a hazard for traffic flow and winter plowing.
_______________________________

This is a huge waste of money which takes up parking spaces which are needed. Spend money on bike paths / lanes or something more useful.
_______________________________

It would be nice for the main block of High Street to be a traffic free zone so pedestrians can leisurely walk around the shops or even have regularly open air market days.
_______________________________

It defaces our beautiful main street, taking away parking spaces, and presents a dangerous turn onto High Street from Huron Street.
_______________________________

Absolutely not!!
_______________________________

such as waste of time and money and makes the main street more difficult to drive down….no reason for it if you live here you know how the move around with the bump outs
_______________________________

Not necessary
_______________________________

We have the bump-outs. We’ll adapt…we always do.
_______________________________

Totally useless and waste of money
_______________________________

how could someone be so stupid
_______________________________

Stop this insanity! Not sure who’s age da this was but how can you compund the bad decision of installing them between Huron and Albert St by extending the mistake to Victoria????
_______________________________

They take up valuable parking spaces and are a nightmare for snow removal.
_______________________________

They take up valuable parking spaces and are a nightmare for snow removal.
_______________________________

Waste of parking spaces
_______________________________

Dumb and dumber
_______________________________

Sooner or later someone isn’t going to notice curb at night and end up hitting it. Also I believe it’s a hazard for children who run a head and then they are right into the road
_______________________________

How crazy are our council members, spending all this money on bump outs. With this move as well as the Port Elgin splash pad we will be seeing many new council members come the next election!.
_______________________________I didn’t think there was a prblem
_______________________________

Parking has always been a problem. This just worsens the problem. Put yourself in the snowblower operator seat. Ridiculous!
_______________________________

They create unsafe turning when two cars meet or are turning at the same time from cross lanes by forcing cars too close to each other.
_______________________________

More wasted tax payers money. Fix the roads that need fixing first.
_______________________________

They must be hard for the winter road Maintenance to work around, and they take up a lot of parking spaces. I don’t really see the safety concern they would provide a barrier for.
_______________________________

Less parking, no citizen consultation. Why?
_______________________________

The angled parking on main already makes it difficult to see traffic when turning onto high st. These bumps add more obstacles for drivers to have to see around. We are making a badly designed street more dangerous.
_______________________________

Good for pedestrian safety
_______________________________

Can see across the street now at Grosvenor
_______________________________

waste of money, and likely to cause an accident
_______________________________

Bump outs take up parking space that is needed in summer. Leave our special, wide main street clear from Victoriato the lake
_______________________________

The only problem area is at High and Grosvenor, during the summer, when there are large numbers of drivers and pedestrians acting like idiots.
_______________________________
