For 163 years, the Arran Tara Fall Fair has not missed a beat however, this year, is different. The Fair that was to be held on September 15th and 16th, like many others due to COVID-19, has been postponed until September 14th/15th, 2021.
The Fair had been called ‘Ontario’s Greatest Class C Fair’ for many years due the number of dedicated volunteers and, from the beginning, it was a truly agricultural fair.
The Township of Arran Agricultural Society was formed in 1857 by some 70 members. Starting out in Arkwright (ON), the annual fall exhibition after much debate moved to Tara in 1882.
Since then, it became one of the most successful fairs in Bruce County with competitions of dairy cattle, miniature horses, lawnmower racing and sulky horse racing.
Another factor that made the Tara Fair unique was that it was held mid-week on Wednesday so that the public school children could ride on floats in the parade that lead to the fair grounds.
