On Monday, December 18th, the 100 Women Who Care Grey Bruce presented their November meeting donation of $24,000 to Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce for their Tiny Homes Project on the Saugeen First Nation.
The weather was cold and wet but that did not dampen our spirits. We were very excited to present our largest donation ever to this worthy effort.
This began as a pilot project under the direction of teachers and with guidance from Habitat at St. Mary’s High School.
The pilot program offered students a hands-on learning experience over the course of the 2022/2023 school year. By engaging youth, Habitat Grey Bruce and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board educated students about the need for affordable housing that has reached a crisis level and encouraged them to consider pursuing a career in a homebuilding trade.
Further, this pilot program gave students and faculty of St. Mary’s High School the opportunity to take an active step in reconciliation with Saugeen First Nation. The approximately 250 square foot Tiny Homes will serve as emergency shelters for individuals and small families.
The school’s capacity to complete the project during the school year faced challenges that resulted in a Tiny Home being relocated to Saugeen First Nation unfinished.
Our donation will allow this home to be completed. It will pay for a Custom-built kitchen, apartment sized fridge and stove, plumbing, lighting, trim, flooring, interior doors, exterior deck and stairs.
Once completed, the home will be site serviced and operated by Saugeen First Nation as part of their overall housing strategy.
Since June 2020, the 100 Women Who Care Grey Bruce has grown from 41 members to 240 active members. Many women are discovering the power of collective giving and making their 100 dollar donation make a huge community impact. This year alone we have donated $90,700 to four valued community organizations.
