Town Council approves promenade construction

At the June 11th Committee of the Whole Meeting, Council tentatively approved staff to proceed with a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the extension of the Port Elgin Main Beach Promenade.

The extension will provide a safe and accessible pedestrian route to the southern end of the Port Elgin Main Beach and will connect the look-out points and key destinations.

Staff is seeking to include in the RFP the construction and redesign of the path around the Harbour and leading into North Shore Park.  Both of these sections were approved in the 2017 and 2018 capital budgets and financed through the tax levy.  Total projected cost for all three projects is expected to be $590,000.

Staff will commence a competitive process in securing a preferred contractor. Anticipated start date will commence fall 2018.

“The extension of the Promenade is in keeping with the Corporate Strategic Plan, Build Waterfront Capital Investment.  ” said Director of Community Services, Jayne Jagelewski.
