Winterhawks coming home for Holiday games – December 22nd early game

It has been a gruelling stretch for the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks, but they’re coming home for a run of home games.After nine-straight weekends with at least one road game, the Winterhawks have parked the bus and will start off a four-game home stand with the annual holiday game.It’s an early 7:30 p.m. start this Friday night, December 22nd, at The Plex as the Winterhawks host the expansion Georgian Bay Applekings for the first time.The team will be presenting the Doug Wood Memorial Award to Janey Harris and Richie Buckland.

The award was previously the Community Service Award, but the team renamed the award in honour of our late timekeeper. Doug’s family will be on hand to help present the award to the two deserving recipients. Both Harris and Buckland found lost money at The Plex last winter, and rather than pocket found cash, they turned it in so it could be reunited with the rightful owners.The Winterhawks have received a ticket request from the North Pole so don’t be surprised to see a certain reindeer-guided sleigh pull up to The Plex, as well.The party will keep going after the game, as our refreshment provider, Three Sheets Brewing, will have a DJ spinning tunes in the Hawk’s Nest as soon as the final buzzer goes.Tickets are $10 each, kids 10 years of age & under are free with a paying adult. We’re expecting a big crowd, so get there early.Not to lose sight of the battle on the ice, the Winterhawks will be looking for two points in the jam-packed standings, and will have a new face in the lineup.The team announced the signing of defenceman Alec Tiley, a 25-year old from Shallow Lake who had a well-travelled junior career, including stops with Jr. A Trenton, Georgetown and Wellington, as well as Pictou County, Nova Scotia.Tiley had a brief foray into the pro game in Europe before playing with his hometown Shallow Lake Crushers last season. Tiley’s father is former NHLer Brad Tiley.The Winterhawks finished off their road schedule on Saturday in Ripley, where a depleted roster put up a good fight against the first-place Wolves, falling 5-2.Justin Donnelly and Matt Shields scored for the Winterhawks, while Jeff Flagler was busy in the Winterhawks net, making 46 saves.
