Winterhawks to honour former Captain Greg Thede

On Friday, January 11th, the Winterhawks will hold a ceremony prior to their game against the Elora Rocks to recognize Thede’s contributions to both the organization and our community during his 11 seasons as captain.

“We wanted to do something for Greg as a show of appreciation for everything he gave us,” said Winterhawks President Gord Lamont.

Amongst his accomplishments, Thede is a seven-time W.O.A.A. Sr. “AA” champion, winning three championships during stops with Durham and Elora prior to coming home to play with the Winterhawks in 2007.

Thede was named the first captain in Winterhawks history, leading the team to four championships in his 11 seasons, playing more games (230) than any other player in franchise history.

“Greg is one of those rare players who had the respect of everybody on the ice: his teammates, the officials and the opposition,” said Lamont. “We could not have asked for a better person to represent us, both on and off the ice.”

He is the Winterhawks all-time leader amongst defencemen in all offensive categories, including goals (31), assists (104) and points (135).

Thede was named the team’s top defenceman on three occasions and was an eight-time winner of the Corry Solomway Award for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication.

The ceremony and game is sponsored by Rowland’s Your Independent Grocer in Port Elgin.

The game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at The Plex in Port Elgin on Friday night as the Winterhawks continue the battle for playoff positioning against the much-improved Elora squad.

Tickets will be available at the door at standard pricing, $8 per person.
