In honour of Remembrance Day, Legion Branch 340 of Port Elgin, participated in the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks game on Friday, November 8th.
Special guest, Matt Patterson, dropped the ceremonial puck.
Matt joined the Canadian Forces in 2001, mere hours before 9/11 and served nine years with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR).
He served in Afghanistan, and was awarded the Campaign Star along with Commendation of Vigilance during Operation Athena.
According to the Canadian Govenment report, “Operation ATHENA had two phases. In Phase I, it was a peace-support mission in Kabul, where ISAF was concerned with ensuring security while the nascent Afghan government developed its constitution and held its first elections. In Phase II, Operation ATHENA moved to Kandahar Province to become the Canadian Armed Forces’ longest-running combat mission.
