In the community of Saugeen Shores on Lake Huron, one of the most widely used scenic pathways is the Saugeen Rail Trail.
The multi-use 25 to 30 km (with loops) trail connecting Southampton and Port Elgin was developed following the former historic railway line and is one that is easily accessed and used by both visitors and residents year-round.
The four-season trail is eco-friendly and used by walkers, joggers, cyclists, skiers and snowshoers. Most of the surfaced trails are on flat terrain consisting of crushed stone, wood chips, wooden walkways or natural paths that join paved streets at several points in the two communities. Although e-bikes can be used, the trail is considered non-motorized and, therefore, ATVs and snow-mobiles are not allowed.

The Saugeen Rail Trail Association made up of volunteers is a charitable, non-profit organization that is dedicated to the planning, support, development and maintenance of the Rail Trail. The volunteers maintain the trails through a combination of their volunteer hours, community funding and membership in the Association.
On Tuesday, November 18th, the Saugeen Shores Rail Trail Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) … and the public is welcomed to attend. Its an opportunity to not only celebrate the accomplishments of the past year but to also learn what is being planned for 2026.
The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Express hotel in Port Elgin and begins at 7:00 p.m., with a special guest speaker, a Butterfly Ranger from the David Suzuki Foundation.
The Association invites everyone to attend and learn more about the
Saugeen Shores Rail Trail.
