Power Workers’ Union helps launch Junior Firefighter Challenge

Thanks to a $3,000 donation from The Power Workers’ Union (PWU), teams of area children will soon be able to compete in their very own Junior Firefighter Challenge.

With funding from the PWU/Bruce Equity Fund, a miniature obstacle course modeled after the popular Bruce Power Fire Fit course will become the latest addition to the Saugeen Shores Jr. Fire and Public Education Program.

The course will be uniquely designed for children between the ages of 9 and 11 who sign up for the six-week educational program run each year by our volunteer firefighters. It will be challenging, but portable so it can be set up at community events such as fall fairs and school fundraisers.

“There’s no greater way for kids to learn about fire safety than to take part in a hands-on, fun activity. This fits the bill perfectly,” says Rob Atkinson, Fire Prevention Officer for the Saugeen Shores Fire Department. “We can’t thank the PWU enough for giving us the support we need to get this exciting project off the ground. What a great way to educate today’s youth for a safer tomorrow.”
