Coast Guard initiates removal of a Southampton derelict fishing boat

For several years, a derelict fishing boat has sat in dry-dock and been a contentious safety issue on the pier at Southampton Harbour at the mouth of the Saugeen River.

The Harbour area is under Federal jurisdiction and, on November 12th (2025), the Coast Guard initiated the removal of the vessel through a salvage company that quickly disposed of it through torch-cutting.

It is unknown at this time if the metal is being taken to a waste/recycle depot, or as a source at the time also said that the steel frame pieces may be taken to Hamilton and melted for the steel component.

Brad Downs, of Downs Contracting and BAT Hydrovac removal, said that the diesel fuel remaining on board was vacuumed for environmental disposal.
