Local entrepreneur Andrew Hill has created a classy, large performance space equipped with comfy sofas, a cool dance floor, a fancy cocktail space, including coffee, beer and wine bar at the top of the Powerlink Building in Port Elgin which he named “Loft 1020”. Many fine performances by musicians near and far have taken place at this new venue over the last few months to the delight of many music lovers and dancers.
Hill is hoping to create a community driven venture designed to connect people and get them dancing again. He approached local musician Charlie Bell to see what might be possible in terms of swing music that evolved after the big band swing era of the 1930-40’s. Bell suggested a Jump Swing band performing Jump Swing, Jump Blues, Rhythm & Blues and Soul music with a Gospel vibe. Bell noted these threads – swing, jump blues, R&B, and soul came together to birth rock & roll a sound that changed the world.
After more discussion Bell and Hill agreed to launch a Jump Swing band to perform at “Loft 1020” with Hill providing the name for the band “CB 1020 and The Jump Jive Gents” The band had its first rehearsal in April and is comprised of well-known musicians from Grey and Bruce counties. The band will also feature a special Canadian guest singer for each performance at “Loft 1020”. The band is excited to perform this music and thinks it will serve as a unique dance and listening experience for all music lovers.
“CB 1020 and the Jump Jive Gents” will launch its first show at “Loft 1020” Saturday May 16th at 7:00 p.m.
