Open House: Re proposed Battery Storage project in Saugeen Township

According to the Neoen website, it is proposing to develop a new battery storage project in the Bruce-Grey region of Ontario to deliver reliable, affordable, and clean electricity that will help strengthen the electricity grid that powers our homes, businesses, and industries.

According to local sources, the company may have already entered into a contract to build a battery storage facility on agricultural land immediately south of Port Elgin east of Hwy. 21. The land was originally owned and farmed for generations by a local family until recently being sold to a private individual.

Neighbouring families, primarily involved in agriculture, have expressed concerns over the    proposed development to be located on “… prime agricultural land”… “that will also create severe lighting concerns, traffic issues, noise and more.”

With a storage capacity of 400-megawatts (MW) / 1,600-megawatt hours (MWh), Neoen Battery can supply enough electricity in a single day to meet the energy needs of approximately 385,000 Ontario households for 4 hours. [NEOEN website]

NEOEN will be holding a Community Open House event on June 11, 2026, for a  “Meet the project team and technical experts, learn about battery storage technology and share your feedback for Ontario’s clean energy transition. Come in at any time and enjoy local refreshments. Proposed project information will also be shared on this page after the Open House” from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Rotary Hall in the PLEX.

“Founded in 2008, NEOEN is now one of the world’s leading independent renewable energy producers. Local Neoen teams develop, build, and operate solar power plants, battery storage systems, and wind farms on four continents.” [NEOEN website].

When the company proposed a similar project in Arran Elderslie (2025), “… Council voted unanimously to refuse the application by the proponent of the ‘Tara BESS’ facility on a 40-acre leased parcel of land on the southwest corner of Arran Concession 4 and the Grey Bruce Line, despite its being recommended by Bruce County Planning”.
