Once again the students of Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) have come through with a highly polished musical production under the professional direction of teacher Leslie Bauman-Turcotte and the superb musical direction by Kerri-Lynn Boys and Ian Burbidge.

This year’s production is the story of Ariel, The Little Mermaid, the poignant story of a young mermaid who wants to become a human and falls in love with a very human handsome prince much to her father, Triton’s chagrin.

The creative set designs bring to life the underwater scenes where the god Triton rules with his marine subjects, and then quickly and cleverly evolve to become the deck of a ship. The vibrant costumes of every colour add to the professional quality of the production.

Lauren Gilbert lends an ethereal quality to the role of Ariel and her voice is delicate and, at times, wistful.  On Thursday (June 9) and Saturday (June 11), Julia Trelford will step into the role.

In the hero’s role of Prince Eric, Gus Bolton and Jacque Lariviere will take turns.

With only a brief first-day preview performance, it is only sure to get better as the actors get settled into their roles.  Watch for a command performance from ‘Ursula’ with her slithering entourage and a scene stealing ‘Sebastian’.

No production is possible without the technicians and their handling of the sound, and lighting in particular, is exceptional.

The production runs each night on June 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th at 6:30 p.m. with a matinee on Saturday the 11th at 1:30 p.m.  Tickets are $15 and available at Cathy’s Flowers n Treasures on Goderich St. in Port Elgin, from the High School office or on-line at www.onstagedirect.com.  Friday, June 10th may now be sold out.
