When it comes to infrastructure, there is nothing more important than sewer and water in a municipality. Without both a town doesn’t function.
Thanks to Saugeen Shores Department of Public Works, they are the boots on the ground that make it all work.

A broken sewer line is no fun for anyone but the Public Works crew takes it all in stride. Once the ‘locates’ for utilities are done, they move in with the heavy equipment to begin what, hopefully, will make short work of the problem.

As far as the crew is concerned, the Giant Vacuum truck is “… worth its weight in gold” as it clears away the debris in the hole that would take hours to complete by hand.

Digging down nine or ten feet, the culprit is found … an original clay pipe that has become entangled with underground roots and has cracked.
“Southampton, especially being a heritage community, still has a lot of the original clay pipes,” said one of the crew, “so this is quite common.”

Once all the new pipes are installed, it’s time to begin the backfilling.
First stone is brought in to line the hole for drainage and then loads of sand backfill are brought in and tamping begins.
It’s been less than a day and the crew has finished with what they set out to do and it’s time to move on to the next project.
All that’s left is paving before winter arrives.
