Canadian Big Band Celebration helps support young musicians

Each Fall, the Canadian Big Band Celebration (CBBC) weekend takes over a variety of venues in Saugeen Shores, with visitors coming from far and wide to enjoy the sounds of music in a range of genres.

The big-band sounds of a bygone era draw people to the dance floor while others enjoy toe-tapping blues, sultry tones of jazz or swinging rock music.

While entertainment is the focus of the Big Band Celebration, it is also an opportunity to help young musicians.

On Tuesday, October 15th, for the third year, the CBBC presented a donation to the Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) band when Linda Campbell, Treasurer of the CBBC, brought a $1,000 donation to SDSS music students.

“We really appreciate this donation,” said music teacher Kerri-Lynne Boys.  “It will definitely help with the purchase of sheet music and charts as well as percussion accessories.”

Each year, the senior band, under the direction of Boys, is the opening act for the Stardust Big Band and is a chance for the students to take to the stage and perform with professional musicians.
