AtkinsRéalis’ company Candu Energy Inc. has announced it is entering into a special project with Canadian nuclear regulators to plan for a Pre-Licensing Design Review of the new Candu Monark reactor’s suitability to be licensed and built in Canada.
According to the publication, World Nuclear News (WNN), in a statement by Joe St Julian, AtkinsRéalis President, Nuclear “… As the world enters a nuclear market super-cycle with estimated demand for 1,000 new reactor builds, we remain on track to complete the Candu Monark’s design by 2027, positioning the first Candu Monark new build to begin as early as 2029 and be completed by the mid-2030s.”
AtkinsRéalis website points out that “… it has over 70 years of global nuclear expertise, delivering nuclear technology products and full-service solutions to nuclear utilities around the world. AtkinsRéalis is the steward of CANDU® nuclear technology, operating on four continents, and provides advisory and engineering services to other nuclear developers.”
On November 18th, AtkinsRéalis’ CANDU® Monark officially opened its new ultra-modern office location in Port Elgin.

The facility currently accommodates 30 employees but, according to V-P Maura McDonald, it is anticipated that number will climb quickly to 50 on-site.
“We also anticipate eventually moving to the new Innovation Park and increasing our staff there from 200 to 300 people.”
Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau, with Bruce County Warden Chris Peabody, cut the ribbon to officially open the new location at 281 Goderich Street.
Mayor Charbonneau alluded to the facets of CANDU technology being “clean, safe, dependable and reliable.”
Bruce County Warden and Mayor of Brockton, Chris Peabody also pointed out the value of CANDU to Canada. “This is about Canadian uranium, Canadian jobs, Canadian technology and the impact it has had over the past 50 years in Bruce County. We endorsed CANDU and, as a team, the Deputy Warden (Charbonneau) and I are working to spread this campaign to other municipalities and other counties knowing full well how important this is for future generations.”

While the CANDU is all about clean, reliable energy, it is also the only nuclear reactor technology that produces medical isotopes without interrupting electricity generation. Bruce Power currently produces isotopes used to sterilize 40 per cent of the world’s medical equipment, and will now be expanding to include a new isotope processing facility.
