One of the highlights at the annual Marine Heritage Festival weekend held in Southampton (Saugeen Shores) on Lake Huron in July is always the cardboard boat races.
Hundreds of people gathered along the shore adjacent to Southampton harbour and Pioneer Park to take in the fun and cheer on the contestants.
This year, 75 boats creatively held together with duck-tape, saw competitors try to fun outrace in their age group, with some however barely leaving the shoreline before sinking. From the very young to the Family category, the over-19 in age to the Corporate category, there were boats of every description. All looked good on the beach, until launched into the water but some made it to the finish line.

At the end, gold, silver and bronze ‘medals’ were handed out to the winners of each heat.
The final of the day was the Lap for Loot race where all boats, still ‘seaworthy’ could enter for the grand prize this year of $44 Cdn.
