With doors opening at 6:30 p.m. on September 12th an evening with former MP and national and international advocate for Canada and Canadians, Charlie Angus will be co-presented by the Bruce Grey Poverty Task Force, the Grey Bruce Health Coalition and the Grey Bruce Labour Council.
Starting the evening off with an Indigenous opening all are welcome to this non-partisan event!
Rebecca Smith, member of Saugeen First Nation is from the Eagle Clan, and her Spirit name is Gentlebreeze. For the event Gentlebreeze will be completing a land acknowledgment and a smudging ceremony. For most people wishing to partake in smudging this will be done outside as people arrive.
According to Labour Council President, Kevin Smith, “Canadian sovereignty, the social safety net, human rights, Indigenous rights and labour rights are all under attack. Global conflict is accelerating instability, and the residents of Grey, Bruce and Huron Counties will not be spared from the negative consequences that this creates. Retired MP, Charlie Angus is fully Elbows UP and is one of the strongest national and international voices celebrating Canadian solidarity, strength and resilience. The Resistance Tour invites all of us to join in! Come join in on September the 12th in Port Elgin”.
Vice-President for Bruce County of the Grey Bruce Labour Council, Dave Trumble notes that “Charlie Angus’ Resistance Tour has crisscrossed Canada, and the message is the same. “Canada is a sovereign nation that will chart its own course in this new world order and Canada will not under any circumstances be bulled or intimidated by the menacing actions of the Donald Trump regime”.
“Charlie has recently taken the tour to Guelph and will be in Owen Sound at the Harmony Centre the day after the Port Elgin Event. At all Resistance Tour stops Charlie’s message informs and gives energy to all of us as fiercely proud Canadians as we stand in solidarity, strength and resilience in this very uncertain world and times” says Grey Bruce Labour Council Vice President for Grey County, Chris Stephen.
Co-Presenting the Resistance Tour with the Labour Council in Port Elgin is the Grey Bruce Health Coalition and the Bruce Grey Poverty Task Force. This cross section of co-
presenters puts a face on the negative consequences of attacks on Canada and vast global uncertainty. Make no mistake this uncertainty along with the Trump regime and their attempts to cripple Canada’s economy through immoral and unethical attacks on our economy through tariffs, for example, will exaggerate the damage already done to public service funding for critical services such as healthcare and make it much worse for those already experiencing poverty and food insecurity and the daily struggle to survive. The Poverty Task Force and Health Coalition will have information available. Addressing potential opportunities for income solutions Jill Umbach, Coordinator – Grey Bruce Children’s Alliance Bruce Grey Poverty Task Force/United Way of Bruce Grey will speak to items such as guaranteed basic income and a living wage”.
Brenda Scott, chair of the Grey Bruce Health Coalition, says “When the American attack on our sovereignty first came into focus, we were asked what made us proud to be Canadians. The great majority of those asked mentioned universal healthcare as a defining characteristic of our country. We understand the need for a more unified and prosperous country, with an economy that can withstand pressure from the United States. But our message to the federal government is that these necessary changes cannot and should not undermine our public services and universal healthcare. Join us in the fight to preserve public health care and withstand the pressure to privatize it. We will have our petition at this event and ask that you consider adding your signature to it.”
