Coldest Night of the Year – Community appreciation letter

To the Community:

The United Way of Bruce Grey and the Southampton Rotary Club who sponsored the Saugeen Shore’s Coldest Night of the Year event extend a huge thank you to all of those who contributed to it’s success on February 22. 191 walkers and 33 teams have raised over $56,000 to date to fight hurt, hunger and homelessness in Saugeen Shores and across Bruce Grey.

Donations are welcomed until the end of March at CNOY.org/saugeenshores.

We also thank our sponsors: Bruce Power, the Power Workers Union, Bruce County Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Centre, Tim Horton’s Southampton, Vanderwerfs Your Independent Grocers, 97.9 the Bruce, Saugeen Times, the Queens Bar and Grill and In Perfect Focus Photography.

Our Saugeen Shores First Responders and Works Department, as always, went out of their way to make the walk in Southampton safe on a blustery and cold day. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and caring town employees, mayor and council.

None of this could have happened without the over 30 volunteers who worked diligently ahead of time and on the day of the event to make it such a success. It was a fun event which brought the community together to raise awareness and raise funds for those in need. Connie Barker very graciously offered us the use of the Chantry Centre for our send-off and our post walk meal of soup and chili prepared by Pier Donnini.

With over 600 people on the list for affordable housing, the use of our foodbanks doubling, and a lack of mental health services in our area we all need to step forward and do our part.

Funds from the 2024 CNOY event helped to fund 211, supply school backpacks to kids, support to foodbanks, support for the Bruce County Short-term Shelter Program, help to pay utility bills and much more. We look forward to reporting back to the community on how the 2025 funds supports those suffering from hunger, hurt and homelessness locally.

The 2026 event will take place on February 28th in Port Elgin. See all of you there! Kristy
