Handbags for Hospice – a record-breaking evening

The 9th Annual Handbags for Hospice held on September 18th (2025) proved once again to be a night to remember as the community came together in remarkable spirit, raising more than $248,000 in support of compassionate end-of-life care at Huron Shores Hospice.

The evening was filled with laughter, generosity, and heartfelt moments.

Returning MC, Phillip Craig, guided the program with warmth and humour, while touching speeches reminded guests of the importance of hospice care close to home.

Huron Shores Hospice Executive Director Cathy Herbert opened the evening with words of gratitude for the sponsors, volunteers, and community members whose generosity makes hospice care possible.

Host sponsor Duncan Hawthorne reflected on Kincardine’s giving spirit and the importance of caring for one another. Representing Gold sponsor Bruce Power, Karen Smith, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, spoke about the company’s pride in supporting such a vital community service.

One of the most moving moments came when Megan McKenzie Freiburger shared her family’s personal experience at Huron Shores Hospice during her mother’s final days. Her story deeply resonated with guests, capturing the true impact of hospice care.

The energy soared during the live auction and Golden Ticket draw led by Layne the Auctionista, whose signature high-octane fundraising style turns fundraising into an unforgettable celebration.

Guests also enjoyed crowd favourites like the Wine Wall and purse hall, where friendly bidding rivalries added to the fun.

“Handbags for Hospice is more than a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of kindness and community,” said Herbert. “The generosity shown last night ensures that we can continue to provide comfort, dignity, and compassion at no cost to those we serve. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this possible.”

Funds raised will support Huron Shores Hospice’s mission to provide a home-like setting where individuals and families can receive gentle, compassionate end-of-life care.

Huron Shores Hospice extends heartfelt thanks to all sponsors, donors, volunteers, and guests who contributed to the record-breaking success of this year’s event.
