Letters to the Editor: Editor responds to Readers who again raise Hwy. 21 crossing as a danger

To the Editor:

Has there ever been any talk of putting in a crosswalk of some sort on the rail trail @ Hi-Berry..maybe even for the summer months ?!?!!!

It’s a very dangerous crossing on foot and/cycling !!
Thank you for your thoughts,

Hi Sharon & Robert,
Unfortunately, this has been an ongoing concern for Saugeen Times’ for 19 years .  We have covered this and raised the issue for all that time, including many photos, that indicated the seriousness of the crossing, and that were sent to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
The problem is … the stretch of highway is entirely under Provincial control (Ministry of Transportation) MTO and many sections are known as ‘connective links’, over which the municipality has no jurisdiction.  The Ministry has been approached MANY times by the town with little to no result.
Among the solutions proposed have been … an activated crosswalk light, an overhead bridge (prohibitive due to truck transport), an under highway tunnel.
The matter is also of concern with impatient drivers passing on the right shoulder (a legal infraction) immediately before the cycling crossing.
As you can see, the issue is complicated and, unless the province (MTO) comes on board with a solution, it is one that cannot be solved.
